At the Wales and South West Maternity and Midwifery Festival we celebrated Emerita Professor of Midwifery at Cardiff University and Visiting Professor at Surrey University and University of Technology Sydney, Australia for her life-time contribution to the midwifery profession.

Billie has been a midwife for over 40 years, since 1996 working in education and research until she ‘retired’ last year. Billie was also the first RCM Professor of midwifery and is a Fellow of the college. Her achievements have included founding and chair of the All Wales Midwifery and Reproductive Health Research Forum and leading the development of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Midwifery Development at Cardiff University, which collaborates with WHO to strengthen midwifery education and practice in the European Region and globally.

In particular Billie has made an outstanding contribution to midwifery evidence through her research, written work and advocacy for midwives. Her research into the emotional aspects of being a midwife has been a powerful voice in supporting the emotional wellbeing of midwives in order to improve the care of women and their families. Her work has triggered the importance of recognition of ‘caring for carers’ globally.

Billie was awarded a CBE by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of her services to midwifery and midwifery education in the UK and Europe.
