Cambridge-based Baby Safe Ltd have announced a crowdfunding campaign for their ‘Safe Sleep Seat’, an innovative remotely reclining child car seat.

Entrepreneur, mother and former Police Office Lisa Walford has been working on designs for the product since her own daughters were babies. In the year’s since she has carried out an exhaustive research and development process and the seat has now reached concept stage. A crowdfunding campaign is the next step to starting manufacture of the design to prepare it for testing prior to mass production and launch on to the UK market.

The Safe Sleep Seat has already been recognised as an innovative and potentially game-changing safety seat having been awarded the 2017 Baby Products Association Concept Award.

The Safe Sleep Seat is a hands-free, reclining baby car seat which allows users to use a single button push to adjust the position of the seat. A design which aims to prevent accidents by distracted drivers and also reduce the health implications for babies of prolonged time spent in car seats.

Many car seat manufacturers recommend that a baby should not be in a car seat for longer than 2 hours, within a 24 hour time period. This is because when a baby is in a semi-upright position for a prolonged period of time it can result in:

1. A strain on the baby’s still-developing spine.

2. Restricted air-flow to the baby’s lungs. The chance of this can increase if a baby falls asleep with their head flopped forward.

Discussing how she came up with the concept of Safe Sleep Seat Lisa remembered driving her own daughters:

“When going out in the car they would regularly fall asleep in their car seat ending up with their head flopping forwards down onto their chests, I would have to stop the car, get out to recline the car seat and move their head into a more comfortable position.”

The Safe Seat Sleep has been designed to reduce the risk of airway restriction, and possible neck injuries to a child left with their head flopped forward, by allowing parents to react immediately to changes in seating position of their child with a touch of a button.
