Dr Wendy Marsh
University Hospital Southampton
My name is Wendy Marsh and I am a Consultant Midwife working at University Hospital Southampton. I specialise in safeguarding and child protection and have worked with vulnerable families throughout my career.
My research area is around the psychological and emotional needs of women, whose previous history warrants the removal of their infant at birth and that of the midwives that provide care for them. The overarching aim of the study was to explore what women perceived their experience to be and ultimately “what was missing” to help support them. It also explored midwives’ perceptions and experiences of engaging with child protection work, in particular removing babies at birth and the emotional and physical consequences to them of doing so. This presentation will focus upon the midwives’ experiences of this contemporary area of midwifery practice.
