Ethel is a senior midwifery lecturer Faculty of Health and Life Science (Department of Midwifery, Public Health and Community), Oxford Brookes University. A midwife since 1979, and still engaged in clinical practice, she remains curious about and interested in several aspects relating to maternal health and wellbeing during pregnancy and the puerperium. The physiology of and care during childbirth are of particular interest, and waterbirth falls within this topic area, as does the use of aromatherapy during labour. These are two areas in which she has research experience. Since 2012, Ethel has worked closely with Dr Lesley Smith on a range of topics including alcohol consumption during pregnancy and together they set up Zumba 4 BUMP.
