University Hospitals of Leicester Home Birth Team (HBT) offers a 24/7 service for a diverse ethnic and socio-economic caseload across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
Launched in September 2017, the home birth rate increased from 150 to 212 births within the first year, and 51% met their attending midwife prior to birth – midwives now work within 3 sub-teams, to maximise opportunities for continuity of care.
The team provides low-risk antenatal and intrapartum care, with postnatal care for everyone, regardless of type of birth. Midwives also collaborate with obstetricians for those considered ‘high-risk’ and planning to birth at home. The team also set up a charity appeal to raise money for equipment and training to enhance the service.
