Dr Helen Shallow
Writer, Presenter and Midwifery Consultant
Helen completed her midwifery studies in Edinburgh in 1987. She was a teenage mother and had two young sons when she commenced nursing studies in 1982. She has worked in all areas of midwifery in several maternity units in both England and Scotland. She experienced two exceptional years practising midwifery in Botswana between 1993-1995. Helen was awarded a Masters Degree in clinical midwifery practice in 1998 and the following year gained her PGCEA in order to share her experiences and learning. From 2000 to 2012 Helen took an active role in scoping and developing birth centres, believing this to be the way forward for a social model of midwifery care. From 2005-2014 she held posts as head of midwifery and consultant midwife in a District General Hospital in Northern England. Helen completed her PhD in July 2016 and has been fully occupied ever since, both working, writing and presenting her PhD findings.
