Debra Young, RN, RM, BSc, MBA
Associate Director of Nursing for Women and Children & Head of Midwifery
Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust , Somerset
Debra qualified as a nurse at St Georges, London in 1985 and as a midwife in Plymouth in 1990. She was awarded a BSc (hons) in Midwifery in 1993 and an MBA in 2001. The majority of Debra’s early clinical experience in midwifery has been in the South West (including an interesting 3 years on the Isles of Scilly!). Debra has always been interested in Public Health and moved to the South East to set up smoking cessation services for pregnant women in East Sussex. She has held posts as a smoking cessation and “SureStart” midwife specialist and as a Consultant Midwife with a public health remit for East Sussex NHS Hospitals Trust. This focus on public health has proved invaluable and has benefited the services she has led, resulting in very successful improvement projects including smoking cessation and flu vaccination. Debra also served for 5 years as a member of the East Sussex Research and Ethics Committee.
Debra has been in her current role for almost 4 years, before which she was Head of Midwifery, gynaecology and reproductive services for East Sussex Healthcare Trust. Debra has also been a midwife assessor for MBRRACE for 4 years, a role which keeps her grounded and focused on achieving the best possible outcomes for women and their families.
