Carmella Obinyan, originally from Liverpool, moved to London in 1980 to train as a nurse. Her career has involved residential social work resettlement and counselling for young, street homeless; work with women fleeing domestic violence; and housing management support for several care homes.
Carmella has spent the past 21/2 years developing the Old Oak Maternity Champions pilot project working with local residents who volunteer and support new and expectant parents through signposting and giving information on local services. The success of the pilot has led to a 4 year extension of the project to include 5 more Champions hubs in Hammersmith/ Fulham.
The PILOT will now extend to Kensington/Chelsea has been active in Westminster borough. With the Maternity Champions in the community, no new and expectant parent is on their own.
