Scotland Maternity and Midwifery Festival Trailblazer Awards

Last week the Maternity and Midwifery Forum’s Scotland Festival took place in Edinburgh. Take a look at the winners and commendees from the Scotland Maternity and Midwifery Trailblazer Awards Ceremony. The Awards recognised outstanding achievement and commitment to maternity and midwifery services over the past year across Scotland and the North East.

Student Midwife Trailblazer Award

Siobhan Callaghan

University of the West of Scotland

Siobhan is highly commended for going the extra mile as University of West of Scotland Student Society President. Siobhan is a reminder of the importance of mutual support to students both to grow and build resilience at a time when drop outs from midwifery courses is an increasing problem.

Zara received particular praise from people in her care and from the CEO of her placement.

Sára Irlanda and Anna Winberg

Student Midwives

Robert Gordon University

Sara and Anna developed a collaborative art exhibition to explore different ways of communication. This highlighted the importance of maternity care and brought awareness of different aspects of parenthood. An aim was to break the taboo about early loss and difficulties of breastfeeding. Their work demonstrated innovation and creativity and outward thinking.

University of the West of Scotland Student Midwife Society

UWS Midwifery Society committee regularly go above and beyond the stress of juggling academic work, placement, families and second jobs to provide a safe space and richer learning environment for student midwives at UWS. They are an incredible team who advocate for their peers and model leadership.

Sheona Brown

Midwifery Lecturer

Sheona’s students say: Sheona is teaching so much more than essential midwifery practice. Sheona is teaching us to be more compassionate, empowering us to embrace challenges, maintain hope, and reinforce positive internal dialogue. She is our daily dose of oxytocin and a true leader in every sense of the word.

Midwifery Practice Leader Trailblazer Award

Keya Smith and Carrianne McPherson

Education Midwife and Senior Charge Midwife, Observation Department

Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy

Kaye and Carrianne have developed a Care of critically ill pregnant patient course with medical colleagues. This further develops midwifery understanding and clinical skills around deterioration of maternal condition and enhanced investigations to support diagnosis and appropriate care management. A great example of multi-disciplinary team trailblazing.

Heather Cluness

Consultant Lead Unit

Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy

Heather trialled the use of Coolsticks for sensory testing of epidural anesthesia – moving toward sustainable practice – saving money and now rolling out for other use.
